Chennai: All India Anti-terrorist Front president and former Youth Congress president M S Bitta today appealed to the Congress to sever ties with the DMK as its leader M Karunanidhi "had hurt the sentiments of Hindus" by his remarks on Lord Ram.
He told reporters that Karunanidhi who had insulted "north Indian gods" would start insulting the "local gods" like Lord Muruga too if people of Tamil Nadu remained silent.
Bitta said he would fight for a legislation to punish those hurting religious sentiments of people.
"I am not against the Sethusamudram Canal Project and the welfare of Tamils. Tamil Nadu is a part of India and it is my wish that Tamil Nadu should prosper", he said.
Denying that BJP-led government had chosen the present alignment of the channel, he said the UPA government should issue a white paper on the choice of the alignment for the project.
Accusing all political parties including the BJP of trying to gain mileage out of the issue, Bitta said he would be the "first person to sacrifice his life to protect the Rama Sethu", without elaborating.
He said religious leaders should discuss the issue and come forward to protect the Ram Sethu.
