570 person were fined for bursting crackers beyond time limit

Mumbai: The city police took strict action against those who were bursting crackers during Diwali till late in the night. (People suffer due to air pollution and noise pollution caused due to bursting of crackers. Deafening sound of crackers is not good for young children and sick patients. Residents of Mumbai feel scared as Diwali approaches mainly because of crackers and they try to go out during Diwali; but now, the police administration is slowly getting aware of the fact and started taking action against such miscreants – Editor)

Police informed that action was taken against 570 persons bursting crackers after the time limit of 10 p.m. during the past 3 days. Action was also taken against 13 persons for using loudspeakers which involved fine of Rs. 8 lacs. Sellers selling crackers without proper license were also fined upto Rs. 5000/-.

The offenders were asked to deposit amounts from Rs.1200/- to Rs.5000/- before their release and they were asked to report in the Court on the following day. An order was issued banning use of loudspeakers and bursting of crackers after 10 p.m. on roads and public places but there were many instances where no heed was paid to this order and complaints were received from people. The complaints were mainly lodged by senior citizens and journalists, informed Shri. K. L. Prasad, the Additional Police Commissioner of Law and Order Section.

Sale of crackers in Mumbai was about Rs. 70 crores. (When the nation is facing major problems like unemployment, terrorism, corruption etc. how can people waste so much money on crackers? – Editor) Crackers were burst till 2.30 a.m. during Diwali on Pali Hill, Bandra; even prohibited area near Jaslok Hospital experienced similar problems.
