Child labour lands Bihar Minister in trouble

Prabhakar Kumar

Patna (Bihar): A day after CNN-IBN exposed how Union Rural Development Minister, Raghubansh Prasad Singh has been using children instead of oxen to plough his family’s land, the Bihar administration has finally woken up and taken note of the extensive media reports.

The District Magistrate of Vaishali has asked for a detailed report of the case from Labour Superintendent Sujit Kumar Rai, even as the Bihar government is getting ready to file a case. Rai will file a complaint in the Court of the Judicial Magistrate on Tuesday.
The Minister, on Monday, had rubbished the report saying there was "no harm if children do small jobs on the land".

He had also said that the media was making a "tamasha" out of the issue. "Woh toh tamasha ke liye kiya hai, koi mazdoori thodi kar raha hai woh. Wahan mazdoori ki toh zaroorat hi nahin hai. Aise hi baal mazdoori keh rahein hain. It’s much ado about nothing. I don’t know why they are calling it child labour," he said.
