Recently, a Bangladeshi daily, The Daily Janakantha had published a report that Hindu houses and a temple had been targeted and demolished, but the administration had tried to suppress the incident (Saturday, 7th Feb, 2015).
The newspaper reported that one Golam Mostafa and his wife Sonaton Begum (Kamri) of Gaibandha approached Sabitri Rani on 4th Feb,15 demanding money amounting to Taka 1,00,000/- as Jiziya; failing which it would be difficult for the Hindu family to remain there. Sabitri Rani refused to pay the money. As a result, the jihadi fanatics attacked the house and temple belonging to Sabitri Rani’s family, ransacked the places, desecrated the idols of Hindu Deities and also caused grievous injuries to a 70 year old woman.
On learning about this incident and the apparent lack of seriousness on the administration to solve this issue, Adv. Rabindra Ghosh of BDMW contacted Mahabub Gini and requested her to look into the issue and help the Hindus in distress. Ms. Gini angrily asked Adv. Ghosh why he was only concerned with Hindus and not doing anything for BNP party workers ! Further, she claimed that the incident reported in the newspaper had never happened and warned Adv. Ghosh against ‘inciting’ Hindus against Muslims. She also insulted Adv. Ghosh by calling him a ‘broker’ while undermining his contribution to the Human Rights movement in Bangladesh.
Adv. Rabindra Ghosh is not a stranger to such intimation and pressure tactics. During his decades long fight for Hindu human rights, he has had to face threats from law enforcement agencies, Members of Parliament, lawyers and Ministers in different parts of the country. There have been serious attempts on his life but the government of Bangladesh has done little to ensure the safety of Adv. Ghosh.
Adv. Ghosh said that after this he also talked to the officer in charge of the police station under which this atrocity was committed. The officer confirmed the news but then the dispute ended in compromise locally without instituting any cases being registered against the jihadi fanatics.
Danesh Das, a victim, said that ‘I had to accept the compromise proposal because I am simple and law abiding Hindu. I would not like to prolong the case considering the future of my stay in the village’.
