This shows the influence of violence through TV & film media on youths. It also shows lack of moral values in youths, so they should get ‘Dharma Shikshan‘ (Teachings of Dharma) to avoid such incidents! -Editor

Lucknow: A teacher in Uttar Pradesh succumbed to his injuries on Thursday, a day after he was attacked by a student while he was on duty as an invigilator.

The incident took place at Guru Nanak Inter College in Bijnaur where Ram Kumar Singh was the centre’s invigilation superintendent at state Board examinations.

As students were writing their Biology paper on Wednesday, Singh ensured that none of them resorted to unfair means.

Immediately after the paper was over, an examinee, identified as Gaurav, hit Singh on his head with an iron rod lying outside the examination hall.

Gaurav was reportedly frustrated that he could not indulge in “cheating” while writing his paper. Singh was rushed to a hospital in Meerut. He died on Thursday. He is survived by his wife, two daughters and two sons.

Talking to The Indian Express, District Inspector of Schools Manoj Kumar Giri said it was a shocking incident. “Singh was managing the centre so well,” he said.

Chief Minister Mayawati has started an anti-cheating campaign in the state, which has already seen a record number of examinees dropping out of the Board examinations this year.

The Secondary Education Minister himself has made surprise visits to district examination centres to find out whether the Government’s diktat has been put to practice by invigilators or not.

The state Government has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for Singh’s family.

Invigilators across the state, however, feel this is not enough and say they should not be sent to remote centres without proper security.

Leader of an organisation of teachers Om Prakash Sharma said, “Singh was reluctant to go to this area which is known for student violence. He ultimately lost his life. The Government cannot wash its hands of by doling out money. We want an inquiry into this. Who decides about schools that can be examination centres? Who is responsible for Singh’s death? All these have to come out in open.”
