Police on Friday arrested two persons in connection with the alleged elopement of a Hindu girl with a Muslim youth from Somkh town in the Mathura district a week ago.

The arrests come even as four more families, including relatives of the youth, left the village after an angry mob of Hindus attacked the religious places, shops and houses of their community Wednesday. The youth’s family had already left the village the next day of the elopement on Saturday.

A case alleging abduction for marrying the girl forcibly has been lodged against the youth — Naeem — at Magora police station in Mathura.

The Mathura police Friday arrested two persons — Kale Khan and Shahzad — for allegedly helping Naeem in abducting the girl. Four others were arrested Thursday on the same charges. Seven persons have been held for indulging in rioting at Sonkh town on Wednesday, the DIG added.

To maintain peace, heavy police force have been deployed in Sonkh. A team comprising senior officials from Mathura and Agra has been formed to trace the girl and the youth, confirmed Agra Range DIG Laxmi Singh.

Meanwhile SSP Manjil Saini, who has now been shifted to Etawah from Mathura, transferred Magora SHO Vinod Mishra to police lines for alleged dereliction of duty leading to violence in the area. Saini assigned the investigation to Bablu Singh Verma, before handing over her charge as Mathura SSP.

Earlier on Sunday, the police team from Magora police station was attacked by locals when they had raided house of Naeem’s aunt following a tip-off about him hiding there in Kosi Kalan area.
