Hindu Body Lodges Complaint Against Offensive School Textbook

By Sanjay Borkar

Margao (Goa): The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) has expressed its strong objection to the denigration of Gandhiji in the Std. X History and Civics textbook and has lodged a police complaint against this with IGP Kishan Kumar on Thursday, June 5.

The complaint was filed by a delegation headed by Jayesh Thali, Goa state co-ordinator of the HJS, and appeals for an immediate ban on the mentioned book. The complaint states that the book contains many objectionable portions including one that suggests Gandhiji encouraged casteism after his return from South Africa in 1915.

Yet another portion of the text states that Gandhiji decided to conduct a nationwide satyagraha for the Rowlett Act created by him in 1919. Further, it says, Gandhiji had to stop this agitation because of three reasons, viz. terrorism among the people and humiliating satyagrahis by asking them to bow down and rub their nose on the streets; to walk on the streets in a kneeling position; and to salute all the British officers.

The HJS, in association with parents, teachers, historians, and educationists has been agitating against these discrepancies in the book since March 2008. The organization has lodged a similar complaint with the Mapusa police.

Panajim (Goa): The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) has taken strong objection against the denigration of Gandhiji in the Std. X History & Civics text and has lodged a police complaint against the same with the IGP, Shri. Kishan Kumar, of Goa Police, appealing to impose an immediate ban on the said book.

The complaint was filed by HJS’ delegation headed by Shri. Jayesh Thali, Goa State Co-ordinator of the HJS. The complaint states that the book contains objectionable information like, ‘After Gandhiji returned from Africa to India in the year 1915, he successfully led the state on the basis of casteism. Also, he decided to conduct Satyagraha throughout the nation for the Rowlette Act created by him in 1919. Further, Gandhiji had to stop this agitation because of the following three reasons – Terrorism amongst the people and their humiliation by asking the Satyagrahis to bow down and rub their nose on the streets, to walk on the streets in the ‘kneel down’ position and to salute all the British officers.’

The HJS, in association with parents, teachers, historians and educationists has been agitating against the discrepancies in the said book since March 2008. However, the Government has not yet taken any policy decision in this regard. An early action in this regard is essential as the next academic year is fast approaching, i.e. from the 5th of June. Through this complaint, the HJS has warned the government that if this issue is not solved on a war footing basis, then the government shall be solely responsible for the consequences thereof. The HJS has lodged a similar complaint with the Mapusa Police Station yesterday evening.

Yours Truly,

For Hindu Janajagruti Samiti
