Mumbai : Despite the science behind immersion of Sree Ganesha idols in flowing water, Mumbai Municipal Corporation (MMC) made an appeal to devotees to immerse the idols in artificial water tanks constructed on the occasion. MMC has constructed 20 such water tanks; but it was observed that the wise devotees hardly responded to the appeal. (Congratulations to Ganesh-devotees from Mumbai for following Dharma by immersing idols in flowing water! Others should learn about Dharma-shastra and next year, give zero response to immersion in artificial water tanks! – Editor) MMC has spent lakhs of rupees on construction of artificial water tanks. Yesterday, the idols of Sree Ganesha were immersed in sea and big lakes. In 20 water tanks of MMC with the construction cost of Rs.75,000/- each, only 2169 idols were immersed in artificial tanks out of 57111 idols immersed after 1-1/2 day of the festival. In the artificial tank near residence of Dr. Shubha Raul, mayor, only 278 idols were immersed. MMC will be immersing left over parts of the idols in deep sea away from the shore with the help of boat. Instructions to this effect have been given by Shri. Madhav Sangale, additional commissioner. It has also been instructed that the immersion should be done in
scientific manner by observing traditions and customs. (When immersion of Sree Ganesha idols is done in flowing water, the vibrations of the principle of Sree Ganesha imbibed in the idol on installation of the idol, flow to far off places with the water and everyone gets benefit of the vibrations. – editor)
Artificial tanks do not serve the purpose of immersion; immerse idols in sea!- Shevale, Shiv Sena municipal councillor
The concept of artificial water tanks was brought forward with the viewpoint of conservation of environment. If, however, the remnants of the idols are going to be immersed in the sea later, the purpose of constructing artificial tanks by spending so much of money is not served. It will be proper to immerse individual idols in sea. The above opinion was expressed by Shri. Rahul Shevale, a Shiv Sena councillor in the meeting of standing committee of MMC.
