Vigil in Ayodhya after Babri masjid model put on display

AYODHYA : Security was beefed up and intelligence units stepped up vigil in Ayodhya after a group of Muslims put up a small model of Babri mosque on Wednesday evening. The move was apparently in retaliation to ferrying of stones into Karsewakpuram for the proposed Ram temple.

Police said some locals put up a thermocol model of the Babri mosque in Ayodhya’s Kaziyana locality, which is near the disputed site.

The local administration, however, immediately swung into action. It took some local Muslim leaders into confidence and got the model – which had been displayed on a stage — removed. The Muslim group, though, objected to the model’s removal saying the government had not stopped arrival of stones in Ayodhya for construction of Ram temple. Later, they protested outside the Ramjanmabhoomi police station.

Faizabad additional DM RN Sharma said the administration would not allow any activity which may disrupt peace. SP City RA Gautam said the situation was normal.

The temple town is back in news for the past few days after arrival of two truck loads of stones for the proposed temple. Besides, the chiseling and carving work at the mandir nirman karyashala has also got momentum. While the VHP and BJP say that there is nothing new in the arrival of stones, rival parties accuse the saffron pariwar of reigniting the temple issue to stoke communal passion before the 2017 UP poll.
