Kandhla ‘Love Jihad’ row : Accused may be released this week

MEERUT : Kandhla resident Mohammed Asif (40), accused of abducting a 24-year-old Hindu girl, is likely to be released soon after the girl’s statement in court on Friday that she was 24-years-old and had eloped with him willingly.

“After the girl’s statement in court, we were expecting an order for Asif’s release. We were expecting the order by Monday but it may come sometime this week. Once the order is in, Asif will be released,” said SP Shamli Vijay Bhushan.

On December1, the girl had disappeared along with Asif, who is her family’s tenant in Kandhla. Asif already has a wife and three children. Vishwa Hindu Parishad, the Bajrang Dal and the BJP, had claimed that it was a case of “love jihad”. They had claimed that he was trying to lure the “innocent Hindu girl”. On December 25, a mahapanchayat was held in Kandhla, demanding that the girl be found. Hours after the mahapanchayat, the girl was traced to an apartment in Delhi’s Vasant Vihar. The girl’s statement in court, that she had eloped willingly with Asif, had left right-wing groups red-faced.

Bhushan had earlier told TOI, “We learnt that the girl had been meeting Asif for about a month, even though it was against the wishes of her parents. Asif told us that they had eloped and he intended to marry her in Delhi. That is why they were hiding in Vasant Vihar. It was a little difficult to trace the girl for so long because she was using seven different phone numbers. If she were using just one SIM card, we would have found them much earlier.”

love-jihadMEERUT : Bajrang Dal, an affiliate organization of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), has demanded a ban on religious conversions after marriage.

Bajrang Dal’s state convener Balraj Dugar said  they would put an end to “love jihad”. The Bajrang Dal leader said that “true love” does not require anybody to change religion. “Why would a Muslim man want a Hindu girl to change her religion after he marries her? We will write to the President of India, demanding a ban on religious conversions after marriage. This gives people the right to marry whoever they want but also protects the majority community against the menace of love jihad.”

Leaders of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), Bajrang Dal and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) had on Friday addressed a mahapanchayat in Shamli district’s Kandhla town over the issue of a 22-year-old Hindu girl who had gone missing along with her family’s 40-year-old tenant Mohammed Asif. Hours after the mahapanchayat, both Asif and the girl were found in New Delhi’s Vasant Vihar. VHP and Bajrang had claimed that this was a case of “Love jihad”.

Dungar told TOI, “I am not an enemy of love but this was clearly a case of love jihad. Why else would a 40-year-old man want to lure a girl so much younger than him? They are not a match in any way. There is a huge age difference and the man is already married with three children. This is a conspiracy to reduce the number of Hindus in the country so that we become a minority.”
