Pramod Mutalik arrested in Mysore

Mysore (Karnataka): Pramod Mutalik, leader of Sri Rama Sena, was arrested by Mysore police when he tried to visit the communally disturbed area on Monday.
 
Mutalik and his associates were detained near the superintendent of police office, in Nazarbad on preventive custody.
 
According to the police, Mutalik, known for his firebrand speeches, may incite communal tension. He will be produced before the court by evening, the police said.
 
It may be recalled that Mutalik was banned from entering the district by Mangalore district administration. Goa also banned him after he threatened his campaign against ‘night light’ and ‘pub culture’.
 
Senior police officers including Additional Director General of Police (Law and order) A R Infant are camping in the area to supervise the situation.

 

The situation in Gayatripuram in Kyatamaranahalli and Ghousia Nagar is under control, said a police.

Mysore (Karnataka): The group clash in Kyathamaranahalli, attacking houses and setting vehicles on fire, has created panic among the residents. The rampaging mob even attacked policemen.

A petty eve-teasing complaint resulted in the clash. Though, the deployment of additional police force and camping of senior cops in the locality have brought the situation under control, many poor families, who have lost their property, wanted to move out fearing for their lives. The victims, particularly women and children in large numbers even mobbed Minister Shobha Karandlaje, MLA S A Ramdas and others, demanding adequate security. They said that many of them wanted to leave Kyathamaranahalli, anticipating further riots on Thursday night.

District In-charge Minister Shobha Karandlaje said: "It is a heinous act committed to tarnish the image of the BJP government. It is a political conspiracy to create confusion during the elections." They have barged into former mayor Srikantaiah’s house and destroyed furniture and other articles, she said, and added that additional police force had been deployed in the neighbouring localities.

She also promised suitable compensation to the victims. Shobha said that all the leaders were invited to conduct a peace meeting.

50 arrested

The residents of Kyathamaranahalli and Kalyanagiri are panic-stricken after the clash broke out at 11 am. Thousands of men belonging to a particular community resorted to vandalism. They threw stones and heavy boulders at the houses and set them on fire. They also desecrated four religious places.

About ten people, including policemen were injured in the violence.

Around 12 vehicles and four houses were set ablaze. The mob vandalised more than 250 houses and shops in the area. An anganwadi centre, printing press, xerox shop and scores of petty provision stores were destroyed. The miscreants also looted jewellery and cash, residents say.

The house of former mayor Srikantaiah also came under attack.The police have arrested more than 50 people belonging to both the communities. About 17 police platoons, comprising eight KSRP, six CAR, three DAR and 100 special commandos are stationed in the area to maintain law and order. A majority of the houses ransacked during the violence belonged to daily wage labourers.

Police Commissioner Parashivamurthy, DCPs D’ Souza and Jawaharlal, ACPs of all five divisions, Inspectors and SIs of all police stations were summoned for the night duty.

According to the residents, the violence broke out after two teenagers belonging to a particular group were handed over to the police for eve-teasing under the influence of drugs.
