Panaji (Goa): A Hindu right wing organisation has sought help from the Goa Directorate of NRI affairs to dissuade tourists from wearing beachwear ‘hurting religious sentiments’.

In a memorandum submitted by the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) to the Directorate of NRI Affairs, the organisation has said that beachwear sporting various Hindu deities and symbols ‘hurts religious sentiments’.

Foreign tourists should be made aware of this even before they enter the country, the memorandum said.

“The North Goa Collector has already banned wearing such clothes,” HJS convenor Jayesh Thali said.

The HJS has also asked the Sub-Divisional Magistrates of various districts here to keep a vigil to stop sale of such beachwear so that no untoward incident takes place due to “hurting of religious sentiments”, Thali added.

The coastal belt of Goa is synonymous with colourful T-shirts and other beachwear, bearing religious quotations and images of several Hindu deities.

Earlier, the HJS had also asked the shop owners to refrain from selling such beachwear.

Dist. Collector goes back on the order regarding sale of clothes

Chaitra Krushna Pratipada

April 10, 2009

Panaji (Goa): K. S. Singh, the newly appointed District Collector of North Goa said that he was not aware of any order issued with regard to putting ban on sale of Tee shirts and other clothes with pictures of deities or with holy symbols. He also said that at least intellectual class should not support organizations that are involved in such agitations. (It is an insult of Hindu deities or the holy symbols when clothes with such pictures are washed or get torn. This hurts religious sentiments of Hindus. Down with K S Singh, the District Collector of North Goa for calling those who support agitations against denigration of deities as of less intellect! Will Singh dare to say anything against Muslims about hurting their religious sentiments? – Editor) Shri. Singh was talking to a group of journalists who called on him in his office.

Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) had started a campaign against sale of clothes with pictures of Hindu deities and holy symbols. HJS had given number of representations in the matter and held demonstrations. The Administration finally took note of the agitations and issued an order to ban sale of such clothes. But few devout Hindus who had approached the police at Mhapsa to lodge a complaint were informed that no such order was received by them (This is cheating Hindus. They should not tolerate such deception by Congress Administration! – Editor).

The police superintendent and public relations officer also confirmed that such order was not received. In this background, the journalists visited the district collector when he expressed such confused philosophy. He said that such fundamentalists are the cause of the pitiable condition of Hindus. (Would Singh have dared to talk about Hindus in such manner if Hindus were fundamentalists! – Editor). This is a ploy to cause disharmony among people (How can it cause discord. It is making an outcry only when Hindus protest against denigration of their deities! – Editor)

Hindus are being misguided. Hindu is not a Dharma but it is a way of life (We condemn Singh for his anti-Hindu statement! – Editor) We shall see once the elections are over (Officers shirking from their duties under the guise of elections should be chucked out! – Editor) The order is passed before I took over so do not ask me anything, said Singh. (This is the manner in which Congress runs the Government. A provision should be made under the law that the officers do not get salary till they acquaint themselves with the problems faced by people! – Editor)
