Fiji: Fiji’s president revoked the nation’s Constitution on Friday, and called for fresh elections by 2014. He also abolished the judiciary. Fiji’s Court of Appeal had declared illegal the interim government of Commodore Frank Bainimarama, who became prime minister after leading a bloodless coup in 2006. Fiji’s international relations were already strained because Prime Minister Bainimarama did not keep a promise to hold elections by the first quarter of this year. The United States and Fiji’s main trading partners and aid donors, Australia and New Zealand, condemned the revocation of the Constitution.

Prime Minister Bainimarama has vowed to protect all Hindu shrines and temples from further desecration and attacks by criminals.

In a letter distributed to the various branches of Shree Sanatan Dharm Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji, the largest Hindu organisation in Fiji with 200,000 followers, its national president Pundit Dewan Chand Maharaj has clearly stated that the Fijian government is working closely with the Sabha and Police to root out all “evil” elements from the society.

Fiji has suffered hundreds of attacks on Hindu temples the latest being the Shiv Mandir at Narewa in Nadi, the tourism hub of Fiji. The temple is now being re-built by the Sharma family.
