Manmohan Sing has been appointed as the leader of the Congress parliamentary party. That means he is chosen as the Prime Minister. Smt. Sonia Gandhi, who is the high command, said, “Politeness is very essential in public life and we would definitely try to maintain it.” This is a very important statement. It is difficult to know, whether this statement was just a passing remark or thoughtful contemplation; but what she said is the essence of democracy.
People are supreme in democracy. Those who wish to represent the people establish various organizations and express their views before the people. Thereafter people make their choice. Once the choice made there is no rivalry between them any more. Later all the chosen leaders unite and sacrifice themselves for the people and the country they belong. Those who are successful in doing so they are really polite and tolerating. They follow democratic traditions ritually. Past History of Congress is not up to the mark unfortunately.
Congress does not tolerate other, not even his existence, in its own party too when Gandhiji realised that Netaji Subhashchandra Bose would not be his slave, he troubled him so much eventhough he was the president of the elected party that this example might be worth mentioning. Nehru, considered as lover of democracy, was a dictator in action. He had attacked Shri. Shyamaprasad Mukherji in the cabinet meeting when questioned about the Hindus in Pakistan.
Indira Gandhi was instrumental in bringing emergency. To cite a fresh example, Shrad Pawar’s party put Maharashtra to shame by its ugly communalism recently. Nationalist Congress while promoting his party abused saying Gopinath Munde is ‘banjari’ and Sameer Bhujbal is ‘gardener’; hence defeat them. Bhujbal must have realized it now that Shri. Balasaheb Thakre never was communal politically. Respectble followers of Pawar should remember now that he has restricted himself to Maratha community only, he does not think beyond that. Smt. Sonia Gandhi should remember that R.R. Patil and Ajit Pawar would have to be taught politeness.
