Acclaimed Hindu statesman Rajan Zed has applauded Pope Benedict for reportedly stressing combating "the many products polluting the mind and heart" during Mass for the feast of Pentecost in Vatican City.
His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI reportedly said, "And just as there exists atmospheric pollution, which poisons the environment and living beings, so there exists a pollution of the heart and of the spirit, which mortifies and poisons spiritual existence.”
Zed, who is president of Universal Society of Hinduism, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, said that ancient Hindu scripture Bhagavad-Gita also talked about purifying the soul. Lord Krishna said in Gita: Nothing on earth purifies like spiritual wisdom.
Rajan Zed pointed out that another ancient Hindu scripture Taittiriya Upanishad told us to practice right conduct, master the passions, control the senses, and strive for peace always.
Controlling desires would bring purity of heart and mind and when the heart and mind become pure, one would find no pleasure in vices and indulgences, Zed argued.
Pope Benedict heads the Roman Catholic Church, which is the largest of the Christian denominations. Hinduism, oldest and third largest religion of the world, has about one billion adherents and moksha (liberation) is its ultimate goal.
