Parisians to Celebrate Lord Ganesha

Shravan Krushna Trutiya/Chaturthi

Paris (France): Paris’ Fete de Ganesh, a colorful celebration, will be held August 30, 2009, centering around the Sri Manicka Vinayakar Alayam Temple, in the Little India district of the city.

A procession will depart from the temple around 11am and weave its way through the streets of Paris, passing through various areas including the Rue Labat and Rue du Faubourg Saint-Denis. Spectators will hear Indian music and see costumed dancers and street entertainers, who traditionally carry an arch made of peacock feathers and flowers above their heads. Dancers will also carry terracotta pots filled with burning camphor. Thousands of coconuts are smashed on the streets during the procession as an offering to the Gods, symbolizing the world and human egos. Sweets, cold drinks and blessed gifts will be distributed to spectators as the statue of Ganesha is carried through the city.
