Bhadrapat Shukla Ekadashi, Kaliyug Varsha 5111
Punjab: As one passes through the congested lanes of Shastri Nagar, an aroma catches your attention. Pay close attention, and you can hear the chanting of hyms as well. Welcome to the Arya Kanya Gurukul, the only gurukul of its kind in Punjab, where girls along with studies learn Vedic traditions.
Spread over two acres in the RS Model Senior Secondary premises, the school started with 50 brahmacharninis, as they are referred to, in 1995. The dream child of Hero Group Managing Director Satyanand Munjal, the school is now home to 130 girls, who are provided food and lodging free of cost.
M R Mehta, manager of the Gurukul said, "It aims at inculcating Vedic and moral values among girls along with modern education which is provided by nine teachers. Anyone can get admission here, but a majority of girls come from Bihar." Sarita, a middle school girl, said, "My parents live in Jalandhar and I came here last year. It has now become my home."
The students are taught in a separate high school affiliated to the Punjab School Education Board. M L Kalra, principal, R S Model School, one of the office-bearers of the institution, said, "For the last five years, girls from the gurukul get their names listed in the state merit list.."
Their day starts at 4 am with sandhya. The girls not only recite hymns but also deliver speeches on these hymns during the evening sandhya, Mehta said. "We teach girls how to play the harmonium and perform havan. It makes them confident and of course their oratory skills also develop along with the Vedic values."
With a pin-drop silence throughout the day, the only sound audible was the school bell and recitation of a poem or mantras and, of course, the commotion as girls leave school and move to their hostels.
Mehta said, "This gurukul is a different world. Here, girls are taught to live in strict discipline so that they become disciplined citizens of the country."
