Hindus have applauded the prestigious National Gallery of Australia (NGA) in Canberra for acquiring rare 900-year-old sacred Nandi (Shiva’s vehicle bull) stone sculpture.

NGA has also set-up an Indian Gallery where this sculpture will be exhibited. It already reportedly has huge 12th-century Pala dynasty stone stele depicting a majestic Vishnu flanked by images of Lakshmi and Sarasvati, Durga’s stone sculpture,15th century dwarpal (door guardian) in stone, works from 9th-13th century Chola period in paper-textile-stone, panel showing Vishnu-Lakshmi, bronze Ganesha, dancing Shiva, and other Hindu artifacts.

Acclaimed Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, while welcoming this valuable acquisition by NGA, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, urged other major museums of Australia to acquire more Hindu artifacts, thus sharing the rich Hindu art heritage with Australians.

Rajan Zed, who is president of Universal Society of Hinduism, further said that art had a long and rich tradition in Hinduism and ancient Sanskrit literature talked about religious paintings of deities on wood or cloth.  Ron Radford is the Director while Rupert Myer is Council Chair of NGA.
