Significance of Pandu Pindara, a pilgrimage place
This place got importance from the period when Pandavas stayed here. Jind village was known as Jayanti Nagari at that time. In ‘Satya-Yuga’, Chandra (moon) was struck with tuberculosis and his disease was cured after having bath at this holy place. Moon is also known as ‘Soma’; therefore, this place was known as ‘Soma-teertha’. Later, during ‘Dwapar-Yuga’, this place became known as ‘Pindarak’. In Mahabharata battle, all Kauravas and their friends were killed and their wives became widows. After the war, Dharmaraj Yudhishthir asked Bhishma, who was lying on a bed of arrows, that how would the souls of dead ancestors get liberation for the welfare of his dead relatives and their grieving widows. Pitamah Bhishma then advised Yudhishthir to go to Pindara; have bath at the holy place and perform ritual of ‘Pinda-daan’. Owing to rituals of ‘Pinda-daan’ performed at this place, it got the name of Pandu Pindara. Pandavas took penance in the forests at this place for 12 years and had holy bath, offered ‘Tarpan’ and ‘Pinda-daan’ for liberation of souls of their ancestors. Still, no ‘amavasya’ fell on a Monday during this period; therefore, Pandavas said that ‘Somavati Amavasya’ will often come during Kali-Yuga. Pandavas consecrated divine Shiva-linga that was found while digging work was carried out at this place.
