Mutt heads want Centre to bring legislation to ban cow slaughter

Kumbakonam : Heads of various mutts have called upon the Union government to enact a legislation to ban slaughter of cows. A resolution to this effect was passed at a meeting of mutt heads who gathered here on Sunday to take part in Mahamaham related events.

Among those who attended the meeting, organised by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), included Muthukumarasamy Thambiran of Dharmupuram Adheenam, Sundaramurthy, joint chief of Tiruppanandal Kasi mutt, Sarangadevikedra Swamigal of Periya mutt, Madhava Kumara Swamigal of Madheswara Siva Aalayam of Ilayankdudi, and Selvaraju of Vedantha mutt, Paramakkudi. Ooran Adigal of Vadalur presided over the meeting held at the Veerasaiva mutt situated near the Mahamaham tank.

Besides demanding ban on cow slaughter, the meeting appealed to the State government that renovation of temples that are more than 100 years old should be carried out under the supervision of experts so that the heritage value is not affected. Other resolutions passed included, auditing of temples under HR&CE that have revenue of more than Rs1 crore be done by the CAG. One of the resolutions demanded legislation akin to Rent Control Act for the properties of mutts and setting up of an independent body to fix rent.
