Temple invite row : Karnataka HR&CE Law may be amended

Issue of printing a Muslim’s name on the invitation card of temple

Will such daring be shown against seats of worship of non-Hindus ? O Hindus, Demand cancellation of the order issued by President of State Assembly ! – Editor, HJS website

Bengaluru : The controversy over the invitation for Sri Mahalingeshwara temple festival in Puttur taluk of Dakshina Kannada district printed in the name of district Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim triggered a heated argument in the legislative assembly too on Tuesday forcing Speaker Kagodu Thimmappa to take both ruling and opposition members to task.

As the tempers rose in the House, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T B Jayachandra promised to avoid such controversies in the future by bringing an amendment to the Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowments Act, 1997.

Raising the issue, Sunil Kumar of BJP demanded that the state government withdraw the invitations with Ibrahim’s name and reprint others without the name.

According to the present Act, the temple festival should be held under the supervision of a Hindu.

Sunil Kumar wanted the government to clarify how it could violate the law under the pretext of adhering to the protocol that the district DC must head the temple festival committee.

The question invited strong protests from the treasury benches and even Kagodu Thimmappa expressed his displeasure by stating that such an argument was against the spirit of the Constitution and fraught with dangerous consequences.

Intervening in the debate, Thimmappa also vented his ire at the government saying, “Is it not possible to amend such a bad law in a day? Bring an amendment to the Act within 24 hours.”
