Nashik : Water level of Gangapur dam has considerably gone down due to famine conditions, exposing parts of land and rocks. It has been observed that ancient idols found while constructing this dam are still in good condition despite facing many floods. People in this area feel that owing to existence of the idols, the dam is safe.
Few labourers found idols as that of Shri Vishnu on an elephant in His incarnation of ‘Varah’; Pindi of Shiva and idol of Nandi, 50 years ago when construction of this dam was undertaken. They then installed the idols near the doors of dam; but with time, as the water level rose, idols got submerged under water.
This year, dam has dried owing to famine; so it became possible for people to see the idols. Local workers have started painting these idols. An idol of Shri Ganesh, which is of 2 and half feet height, has also been found but nobody knows how it came to be there.
