1. Cruel custom called ‘Tukkam’ for taking atonement !

There was a custom followed at Ilavur Puttankavudevi’s temple at Ilavur, Kerala for taking atonement. Under this custom, an iron hook used to be pierced in the back’s muscle of a person and the person was lifted at 32 ft height (as given in photo) and in that condition, the person used to be taken around the temple on circumambulation route 3 times. A person who had planned to do such act for fulfillment of some wish, used to get atonement done through another person by paying that person some money. This cruel system was stopped after a long time in 1987; as a result of prolonged movement undertaken by ‘Hindu Navottham Pratishthan (HNP)’ led by ‘Pujya’ Bhoomanandateertha Swamiji.
