Significance of ‘Panchkoshi Mahayatra’
It is said about this ‘Yatra’ that once Parvatai Mata asked Bhagavan Shiva to show her such place which would give maximum happiness and would never get destroyed. Mahadev said that Mahalakal is such place which is more beautiful than heaven and where one can get devotion and liberation. Here, Deva-Gandharva stay for the purpose of getting siddhi (superpower) and liberation. Here, even biggest sin also gets absolved. It is more powerful than Ganga, Kurukshetra and Tri-pushkar. On hearing this, Parvatimata saw Mahakal forest and sought a boon from Mahadev for protecting this forest. As per the same, Bilkeshav, Kayavarohaneshwar, Pingleshwar and Durdureshwar, the 4 ‘dwarpals’ which are forms of Shiva, were placed who bestow ‘Dharma’, ‘Artha’ ‘Kaam’ and ‘Moksha’. Within these 4 temples, there is a chain of 84 Mahadev temples. As per ‘Skanda-Purana’, the fruits of staying in Kashi for a long time are less than undertaking ‘Panchkroshi Yatra’. This ‘Yatra’ is concluded on completing circumambulation of 118 kms area and is started on Vaishakh Krushna Dashami; concluding on Vaishakh Amavasya i.e. from 1st to 16th May.
