HJS Bangalore demands removal of Husain’s art from National Gallery of Modern Art

On 18th December 2009, learning that two Modern art pieces titled “Mother & Child VII” and “A Tribute to Mother Teresa” drawn by M F Husain were displayed at the prestigious National Gallery of Modern Art, members of HJS Bangalore Mrs. Purnima Prabhu and Mr. Aravinda Baliga met the Officer in charge of the Gallery to request the removal of the art pieces from the exhibition. Mrs. Rehena Shah, the officer in charge received the letter from the members and told that they have been receiving many calls for removal of the Husain ‘s art pieces. She also told that a group of 35 artists have strongly opposed any such removal.

Mrs. Shah called her junior officers to take part in the discussion with HJS members. Mrs. Purnima Prabhu explained as to how Husain has hurt the Religious and Nationalistic Feelings of Crores of Hindus and Indians by drawing Bharatmatha, Gods and Goddesses in nude. When more than 1250 police cases and cases  in Court were filed against him he fled the country she added. Sou Rehana Shah agreed to the HJS members view point that Freedom of expression of an artist should not encroach on hurting others religious sentiments. But she expressed her helplessness in taking any action with regard to removal of art pieces as all decisions are taken by the Director, National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi. She told the Samiti members to directly convey their request to him.  The Samiti members agreed that they would send a separate letter to the Director but were insistent that Bangalore Office also has to forward the letter to the Director. The officer reluctantly agreed and sent the fax to the Delhi Office. The Department comes under the purview of Ministry of Culture, the portfolio of which is held by Mr. Manmohan Singh, the Honourable Prime Minister of India.
