Bagalkot (Karnataka): The police on Wednesday detained 30 persons for "allegedly" violating prohibitory orders imposed here following tense situation for the past two days.
The police had imposed Section 144 of IPC in the city since Tuesday evening after communal clash broke out on Monday. On Tuesday, they had also arrested three persons for "allegedly" triggering the clash.
To protest against the police for not arresting those responsible for the clash, the activists of pro-Hindu organizations like BJP, Srirama Sena, Hindu Jagarana Vedike and Bajrang Dal called Bagalakot bundh on Wednesday.
Stone-pelting incidents were reported at various localities of the town. Bus and rail services were affected while the business establishments remained closed during the bundh.
Reason for tension
Trouble began on Monday at Killa area here when some miscreants hurled stones at the doors of three temples, damaging decorative idols and other articles there. The Hindu organizations called for a bundh to protest the "delayed tactics" of the police in arresting the miscreants.
The Hindu activists had given a given a deadline (4 pm on Tuesday) for the police to arrest the culprits, but on seeing their failure to meet it, they held a meeting and decided to intensify the agitation.
DC D S Vishwanath and SP Abhishekh Goyal have appealed to the people not to panic and to maintain peace. The Hindu organizations also boycotted the peace meeting convened by the district administration on Wednesday.
The activists said will continue to protest till the culprits were arrested.
