Goa : HJS demands immediate withdrawal of lesson on Maria Sharapova

A lesson in 9th standard text book of Goa on tennis-player Maria Sharapova who has been banned due to her taking steroids

Panaji : Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova has been banned from participating in international tournaments due to her consuming banned steroids. There is a lesson in English text book of 9th standard in Goa on this player. Lesson based on a player, who is involved in illegal activity, is setting wrong ideals before students; therefore, this lesson should be removed. The above demand has been made by Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS). Dr. Manoj Solanki, Goa State Coordinator of HJS informed that a representation would be submitted to Education Department in this context, on behalf of HJS.  

Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova has been banned for two years by International Tennis Federation in connection with consumption of steroids and the ban has been imposed on her from 26th January 2016 till 25th January 2018. She will not be able to take part in any competitive tournaments during this period. Lesson on such controversial Maria Sharapova has been included in 9th Standard English text book by NCERT, Goa Board in. The lesson is titled ‘Reach for the top – Part 2’. Dr. Manoj Solanki of HJS while demanding withdrawal of this lesson said, “Maria Sharapova has followed illegal path to get money and fame. Will lesson on such person teach good moral, values to children ? Situation in other countries is different from India. There are several great personalities in India then where is the need to include a lesson on a foreigner ? Lesson on great personalities from India should be included so as to keep true ideals before our students.”
