Oscar winner Hollywood actress Gwyneth Paltrow’s (Shakespeare in Love) New Year’s resolution is “to learn how to meditate”.
Talking about “meditation” in the latest weekly newsletter of her blog “GOOP—nourish the inner aspect”, she wrote: “It’s always sounded like something I should do, but I don’t know how to. My friends who do it say it’s really freakin’ brilliant. They say you can’t know the peace/awareness/contentment until you do it. My brain drives me mental. I am going to start. Tomorrow. I asked three amazing people to share how they achieve this bliss. Their approaches are different but I think they are pretty much landing in the same spot. I think I get it.”
Hindus; who have been strongly critical of Paltrow’s blog for mostly being too materialistic and indulging in very mundane things and shallow substances dealing with temporal and external pleasures, and catering to “outer” while claiming to “nourish the inner aspect”; have praised her for “taking a step in the right direction”.
Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada today, congratulated Paltrow for adopting meditation as a New Year’s resolution and for discussing meditation techniques in her blog. Meditation was a condition of profound internal wakefulness, Zed said, and added that ancient Hindu scripture Taittiriya Upanishad stated: “Meditation is Brahman (the supreme being)”.
Rajan Zed, who is president of Universal Society of Hinduism, further said that Lord Krishna told in Bhagavad-Gita: With mind and senses disciplined through meditation, bonded with the Self within, the seeker achieves tranquility and nirvana, the state of permanent peace and joy in me. Zed described pratyahara (withholding), dharna (concentration), and dhyana (intellectual contemplation) as three stages of meditation leading to samadhi (trance).
Zed; who had been criticizing Paltrow in the past for the frequent absence of deep spiritual and philosophical thoughts in her blog GOOP whose tagline was “nourish the inner aspect” blaming her for marketing a product with an entirely different label; have now wished her all the best in her exploration into meditation. He offered to help Paltrow, if asked.
GOOP is said to be a name carved from 37-year old Gwyneth Kate Paltrow’s initials, who is also sometimes known as “part yogini”.
