Mumbai : Few ‘Dahi-handi’ festival committees celebrated ‘Dahi-handi’ with human pyramids above 20 feet and inclusion of minor youth for climbing on the top layer; paying total disregard to Supreme Court’s decision. In Naupada area in Thane, ‘Jai Jawan Pathak’ sponsored by MNS won the prize of Rs. 11 lakhs by erecting 9-layer ‘handi’. Cases have been filed against this ‘Mandal’ and MNS sponsors. MNS’ organizers with strong political support said, “I don’t care if one case is filed against me when there are 93 cases filed against my ‘saheb’.”
At many places in Mumbai, ‘handis’ were broken by erecting human pyramids of higher than 20 feet with 7-8 layers. ‘Jarimari Govinda Pathak’ broke ‘handi’ strung in front of Baba Magdum Shah durgah and later, bowing before the drugah. Black cloth was waved at Dadar by one ‘Mandal’ to protest Court’s decision whereas another ‘Mandal’ broke ‘Handi’ by using a ladder. ‘Konkannagar Mandal’ had 9 layers- pyramid by sleeping on the road. At Chembur, there was 8 level human pyramid erected by MNS and at Borivali, there was ‘handi’ strung at more than 20 ft level by Shiv Sena.
At Ghatkopar also, every year, a tallest ‘handi’ is strung; but this year, BJP- MLA Ram Kadam and Kirit Somayya broke ‘Handi’ that was strung at less height; in keeping with Court’s order.
