Mumbai: Dr. Shyam Manav had made a statement in a program held at Khamgaon that the anti-superstitions Act could not be passed due to the opposition of Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) and Sanatan Sanstha. The claim of Dr. Manav has been refuted by HJS. An explanation was given by HJS on Sahyadri channel of Doordarshan in its news program that the proposed Act was also opposed by Shiv Sena, BJP, Warakari Sampradaya and Patanjali Yogapeetha along with HJS and Sanatan Sanstha.
In terms of the clause 13 of the said Act, there is a provision for punishment for performing certain religious rites and rituals of Hindus and therefore, HJS has been opposing the Act. It has been mentioned that ‘Upwas (fasting), Tapashcharya (penance) and certain other rituals cause physical, mental and financial harm and therefore, there is a provision to brand undertaking of such rituals as non-bailable offence and this is what is opposed by HJS. Shri. Shivaji Vatkar of HJS has written a letter to the channel saying that the news related to Dr. Shyam Manav telecast by the channel was one-sided and has requested the channel to bring forth even the wrong side of the proposed Act before the people.
