Is the Government going to preserve invaluable and historical heritage or do history-lovers have to stage movement for the same ?
Pune : There have been several instances of theft of ancient idols of Deities and souvenirs of brave warriors etc reported of late, from the rural areas of the State. It is stated that such valuable heritage has been neglected; therefore, it is leading to incidents of theft and illegal sale of these things. Gangs of smugglers connected to international black market are said to be involved in such thefts. (Why don’t police find the roots of these gangs and eliminate them ? – Editor, Dainik Sanatan Prabhat)
Sou. Sayali Palande- Datar, a history-scholar, said that there was no record of idols installed outside temples or in the courtyard of individuals with the Government. The local residents hesitate to lodge complaint after an idol is stolen to avoid unnecessary questioning by police. In cities, people ask whether idol installed in your doors is for sale. People are indifferent towards registering the items of historical importance owned by them by way of inheritance although it is a legal requirement.
Archaeology Department’s apathy towards theft of idols !
Shridatta Raut, a historian said, “The beautifully chiseled idols which were there in open moorland for all these years without any security, are suddenly disappearing. The number of idols installed in surrounding areas of forts and temples is going down. Many fort-lovers brought the same to the notice of Archaeology Department by lodging complaints but it is paying no attention to the complaints; claiming that the issue didn’t come under their jurisdiction.
