Killer of Prashant Poojary stabbed in Mysuru jail, succumbs in hospital

prashant_pujariSuneetha Madikeri | HENB | Mysuru :  A Muslim prisoner died of stab injuries suffered during a clash with another Hindu prisoner in Mysuru central jail on Thursday.

Police sources identified the dead as Mustafa, who is the accused number one in the murder of Prashant Poojary, a Bajrang Dal activist, in Moodbidri in Dakshina Kannada in October 2015.

Mustafa was attacked by Kiran Shetty, also an undertrial in a different case. Police confirmed that Shetty was a follower of Prashant Poojary.

Poojary was popular among the Hindus as a devote cow vigilante, but Muslims were against him for his ‘cow protection’ activities. On 9 October 2015 at about 7.00 am Prasanth was hacked to death near his flower shop. 10 people were arrested in connection with Poojari murder. Five of them viz. Mohammed Sharif (42), a resident of Todar; Musthafa Kavoor (28), Mohammed Mustafa (25) of Kinnipadavu;  Bajpe(27) and Kabeer (28) of Kaikamba were believed to be directly  involved in the murder of Prashant Poojari and the murder of Vaman Poojari an eye witness of Prashant murder .

An eyewitness to the incident 60 year old Vaman Poojary, a tender coconut seller whose shop was opposite Prashant’s shop, went missing on 15 October, 2015. He was found dead on the next day. It has been alleged by Nalin Kumar Kateel MP from Dakshina Kannada constituency to which the town of Moodabidri belongs that witnesses were being threatened over international phone calls including those made from Pakistan and asked not to testify against the suspects.

In two cases Musthafa Kavoor, the killed undertrial, had prominent role and believed as the mastermind of Poojari killing.

During the fight between two undertrials, Kiran Shetty stabbed Musthafa dangerously. Though Musthafa was rushed to K.R. Hospital, he succumbed to the stab injuries without responding to any treatment.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rudramani, CCB Police Prakash and Metagalli Police in-charge Sunil Kumar visited the spot. Rudramani  said, an inquiry is underway to ascertain the reason behind their fight. The probe will also find out how the accused came to possess a knife used in the assault on Musthafa.
