Upset Hindus have asked for the immediate withdrawal of “Kali Mints” sold by a Washington (USA) based firm, calling it inappropriate.

Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, said that inappropriate usage of Hindu deities or concepts for commercial or other agenda was not okay as it hurt the devotees.

Zed, who is president of Universal Society of Hinduism, stressed that Goddess Kali was highly revered in Hinduism and she was meant to be worshipped in temples and not to be used in selling mints.

Hinduism was the oldest and third largest religion of the world with about one billion adherents and a rich philosophical thought and it should not be taken lightly. Symbols of any faith, larger or smaller, should not be mishandled, Rajan Zed argued.

Meanwhile Bhavna Shinde of Forum for Hindu Awakening has also termed such usage of Goddess Kali as “upsetting and denigrating”. She urged Accoutrements that after recalling Kali Mints; it should not to make such products in the future also which trivialized the revered and sacred symbols of faith.

Description of “Kali Mints” on Accoutrements website is given as: “Kali is a Hindu goddess that represents death, destruction, time and change. And what food comes to mind when you think of death, destruction, time and change? Curry! These exotic spice mints are great on their own or as an accompaniment to basmati rice and garlic naan.” Both the lid of the round tin and display box contain the Kali picture with her tongue protruding out carrying a mint on it.

Accoutrements, based in Mukilteo (Washington), claims: “For over 25 years we’ve provided the world with amazing products that provoke, challenge and entertain…You won’t find bland and boring products here …we pride ourselves on being less disappointing than other companies.”

Goddess Kali, who personifies Shakti or divine energy, is widely worshipped in Hinduism. She is considered the goddess of time and change. Some Bengali poets described her as supreme deity.
