Sangli (Maharashtra): Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) had organized Hindu unification meets in the district on the occasion of ‘Guru-Pournima’. In all such programs, police carried out investigations before and after the programs. At most of the places, police from Intelligence Bureau were present.

When Sangli sub-zonal office was approached seeking permission to use loudspeakers, it was advised to first get the permission of city police station for holding the gathering. When the city police station was approached, it was told that since it was internal matter, there was no need for permission. When the members informed the sub-zonal office about non-requirement of permission, the officials were not satisfied. They called up the city office and discussed the matter with them over phone. It took 3 days to get the permission to use loudspeaker. Mr. Ajit Patil, a member of HJS was contacted thrice by the local investigation bureau (IB) office prior to the gathering to ask about various details related to the gathering. The IB officers even called Mr. Shivaji Vatkar, the district-coordinator of HJS for Mumbai, Thane and Raigad for some clarifications.

Staff of IB was present at the gathering and they took a round to see the exhibition, listened to and recorded the whole program.

Experiences of Police investigation at other places

Miraj – When members went to seek permission to use loudspeakers, they were bombarded with questions like ‘What is the nature of the program?’, ‘Who are the organizers?’, ‘What are the names of the members and their contact numbers?’, ‘What announcements are going to be made?’ etc. The members were made to wait for 2 days to get the permission for loudspeakers.

Tasgaon – Police from IB were present for the program. They also saw the exhibition and passed a remark that the attendance was less owing to rain.

Kundal (Taluka Palus) – Here, the police asked names of all speakers. They asked about the topics to be taken up by the pro-Hindus and speakers of HJS. They checked whether permission for the hall was taken and instructed not to use loudspeakers outside the hall. Application was submitted for permission on 20th July but on 24th July, at 6.00 p.m, the permission was granted after constant follow up. Notice was given to the organizers to see that feelings of people from other religions were not hurt. Similar notice was given even at the program held at Kundal. Instructions were also given to see that the vehicles at the venue did not block the roads and create traffic jam and the hoardings of the program did not create hindrance in traffic. Women members of HJS were going to the police station to seek permission but they were also not spared and were called number of times.

The policemen from IB were present at the venue with all the recording equipment but the recording was not done.

Alasand (Vita)- Here, when members went to seek the permission for using loudspeaker, they were asked details like vehicle numbers, names of speakers and organizers, names of workers etc.’ When names of 2-3 organisers were given, they were not satisfied and insisted on giving more names. The police also refused to give permission without first listening to the program cassette and till the names of drivers of the vehicles were made available. The policeman said to HJS members that ‘People look at you with suspicion and they do not agree with your views’ and the police insisted to take permission for the sabha in advance.

Four staff members of IB were present during the program; one of them was making notes of the proceedings, policemen were also at the exhibition and purchased few books. They asked for the VCD on various slogans.

Guru Pournima program at Ramnathi under police surveillance

Ramnathi (Goa) – The Guru-Pournima program held at Sanatan’s ashram at Ramnathi was under police surveillance. Two policemen in plain clothes were keeping a vigil at the venue by standing on the road opposite the ashram. (Rather than keeping a vigil on an organization like Sanatan Sanstha which is selflessly working for the welfare of the Nation and Dharma, if the police had kept an eye on anti-national terrorists activities, India would have been freed from terrorism by now.’ ! – Editor SP)
