HJS warns to start agitations if the Govt. does not declare its policy on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj
Panaji (Goa): National Committee for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has once again degraded Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in its text book ‘Social Science – Our Past-2’ by giving him an inferior position. There are pictures of all Mughal kings; but pictures of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj are not given in the respective lesson titled ‘Shivaji’. A memorandum has been submitted by Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) to Mr. Digambar Kamat, the Chief Minister of Goa demanding inclusion of pictures and proper information related to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. The State Government should declare its policy on the above issue. The memorandum has been signed by Mr. Anant Shet, a BJP MLA from Maye. A warning has also been given that once again agitations would be started if the above demands are not fulfilled.
In the last year’s History text book published by NCERT, there were 60 pages devoted to the history of Mughal invaders and 5 lines for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. HJS had, therefore, staged agitations all over the State with the help of others, when Goa Education Board added a lesson, during the current academic year, on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj giving his information in 5 pages.
In this text book, there are lessons on ‘the Mughal Empire’ and ‘Rulers and Buildings’ in which there is glorification of Mughal invaders and pictures of Babar, Akbar, Jehangir, Shahjahan and Aurangzeb have also been published. NCERT has rare pictures of Mughal kings and buildings in that regime which are older than 400 years; but it does not have a picture of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj who fought with Mughal empire 350 years ago to establish ‘Swarajya’. A circular was issued by the Government even before publishing of the books, instructing the schools not to teach the lessons no. 4 and 5 glorifying the Mughals.
‘When these lessons were not to be taught, why were they not excluded while re-publishing the book? What is the Government’s policy in the matter? What action is proposed to be taken by the Government on those who are wasting Government’s money by publishing unwanted lessons? Are Hindus supposed to start movements again and again for the history of their valiant kings?’, says the memorandum. Copies of this memorandum have also been submitted to the Education Minister, Opposition leaders, Education Department, Goa School Secondary Board and NCERT.
