Protest: Defamation of Sage Atri by so-called Swami Paramahamsa

Bhadrapad Krushna Ashtami, Kaliyug Varsha 5112

Appeal to devout Hindus

In an article by so-called Swami Paramahamsa Satyananda of ‘Yoga Magazine’, he has defamed Sage Atri by writing dirty stuff against him. All Hindus should protest lawfully against such defamation of Sage Atri, so that Swami Paramahamsa should remove defamatory article immediately and he should also apologise to all Hindus for hurting their religious sentiments.

The Article can be seen here : http://www.yogamag.net/archives/1998/ajan98/dattatre.shtml

Defamatory Part of the Article : Dattatreya’s mother was Anusuiya and his father was Atri. Anasuiya was a chaste and virtuous lady. Atri was a man of extremely immoral character. Their natures were opposite. Atri used to go to prostitutes every night. When he could not walk due to disease and pain in his legs and knees, Anusuiya used to carry him on her shoulders to the brothel every night and bring him back every morning.

Dear Sir,
I read the article at the following link.
http://www.yogamag.net/archives/1998/ajan98/dattatre.shtml

The wonderful article is marred by the following controversial statement at the start of the article:
"Anasuiya was a chaste and virtuous lady. Atri was a man of extremely immoral character. Their natures were opposite. Atri used to go to prostitutes every night. When he could not walk due to disease and pain in his legs and knees, Anusuiya used to carry him on her shoulders to the brothel every night and bring him back every morning."

Can you please back up this statement by citing chapter and verse from Ramayana/ Mahabharata? In my humble opinion, either you should back up this with authentic scriptural evidence failing which you should delete this portion and apologise.

With all humility

Dear Sir,

I have written to you yesterday in extremely polite tone to give scriptural basis and evidence for your controversial statement that Atri used to visit prostitutes every night and Anusuya, his wife used to carry him on her shoulders to the prostitutes. You have not done so till now. There are two very honourable options left to u as I wrote in yesterday’s mail:
1)Either furnish scriptural evidence for your assertions.
2)Or delete these controversial remarks and apologise.

You have so far done neither. There is a sanskrit dictum "Maunam sveekruti lakshanam" which means "Slience is indication of acceptance". So, do you accept my contention that your statements on Atri rishi are without scriptural basis?

Your swamiji may be a very learned person. But whatever he says need not be accepted by us. There is an ancient sanskrit dictum "Yuktiyuktam vachograhyam balaadapi shukadapi
Yuktiheenam vachas tyajyam vruddadapi shukadapi"

The above saying tells us to accept "yuktiyktam" sayings(i.e. sayings backed by logic and evidence) even if they be from shuka(parrot) or bala(child). The above saying also tells us to reject yuktiheenam sayings(i.e. sayings lacking logic and evidence) even if they come from vruddha(elders) or shuka(Sage Shuka).

The above saying casts an obligation even on elderly persons and authorities like Sage Shuka to back up what they say with right logic, evidence and arguments.

With all humility
